The prime minister’s address »
Thank you!
Thank you!
In the spring of this year, Anders Bergman and Tor-Erik Andersson
decided that the time had come for them to step down from the committee
of the SwedishBhutan Society and announced that they would not stand for
re-election. Anders and Tor-Erik have been members since the 1980s. Indeed,
Anders has been a member since the society was founded in December 1986!
Some years later they both became engaged in the work of the committee,
Tor-Erik with responsibility for finances and Anders, first as secretary and
then later, in 1994,as editor and responsible for our newsletter, Druk Yul.
He wrote about the positive and the negative aspects—the joys and the
difficulties— of Druk Yul, which you are now reading is, in fact, the 53rd
number that Anders has produced and edited! Yes, he has promised to
continue for an unspecified time in the future, as a member of the
editorial team, but will hand over the main responsibility to others.
It is more than the many years as members of the committee that unite
Anders and Tor-Erik. Both became associated with Bhutan through their
professional activities at the Land Survey of Sweden. During the 1980s
Anders participated in a UNDP project aimed at assisting with the
establishment of a modern land survey organisation in Bhutan.
Tor-Erik’s interest has not only been focused on Bhutan, but has included
the whole region. He has played an active role in the activities of the
Sweden Nepal Society and the Stockholm section of the Swedish Committee
for Afghanistan.
Both feel that one of the most positive aspects of committee work has
been the comradeship and the opportunities to meet so many interesting
people, both Swedish and Bhutanese.
Anders and Tor-Erik hope that the society will continue to be active and
successful. We, the new members of the committee, would like to thank
them both for all the years during which they have endeavoured to make
membership of the society both rewarding and interesting. Together with
the editorial committees of Druk Yul and our homepage we will do our
utmost to ensure that this will continue to be the case.
